Made to compliment the regional flag of September 2008, my Dorset cross bunting is made to promote all that is great about Dorset. Bunting is traditionally used to celebrate and decorate streets and public areas in times of pride and joy. Why not have a little bit of your own Dorset Cross outside your front door, shop or cafe?

Designed with the bright colours of yellow, red and white, this will surely be eye catching whatever the occasion or weather!

This length is 10ft or approximately 3 meters and has 14 double sided hemmed cotton pennants which can be washed and ironed after use. For longer lengths or custom orders, why not get in touch?

Enquire about weddings, fetes and all street party celebrations.

The Dorset Cross or St Wite’s flag was recognised as the flag of Dorset on the 16 September 2008, when Dorset County Council organised a public vote. Since then it has been recognised as the regional.

Who was St. Wite?

It is unfortunately not possible definitely to identify St. Wite.

Until the middle of the 19th century the local tradition had always been, for something like 900 years, that St. Wite was a Saxon woman who was killed by the Danes on one of the occasions of their landing at Charmouth, Dorset

The Shrine of a Dorset Saint St Wites Bunting

St. Candida (or St. Wite) and Holy Cross, Whitchurch Canonicorum is the only church in England, other than Westminster Abbey, that retains the original medieval shrine and relics of the saint to whom it is dedicated.

In Norfolk, a character called ‘Jack’ Valentine traditionally knocked on the rear door of houses leaving sweets and presents for children. Although he was leaving treats, many children were scared of this mystical person.

Meanwhile in Wales, many people celebrate Dydd Santes Dwynwen (St Dwynwen’s Day) on January 25 instead of (or as well as) Valentine’s Day. The day commemorates St Dwynwen, the patron saint of Welsh lovers.

Over in France, a traditionally Catholic country, Valentine’s Day is known simply as “Saint Valentin”, and is celebrated in much the same way as other western countries.

In Spain Valentine’s Day is known as “San Valentín” and is celebrated the same way as in the UK, although in Catalonia it is largely superseded by similar festivities of rose and/or book giving on La Diada de Sant Jordi (Saint George’s Day).

And in Portugal it is more commonly referred to as “Dia dos Namorados” (Lover’s Day / Day of those that are in love with each other).

In Denmark and Norway, Valentine’s Day (14 Feb) is known as Valentinsdag however it is not celebrated to any great extent.

In Sweden it is called Alla hjärtans dag (“All Hearts’ Day”) and was launched in the 1960s by the flower industry’s commercial interests heavily influenced by America

Lastly but by no means the least Finland Valentine’s Day is called Ystävänpäivä which translates into “Friend’s day”. As the name indicates, this day is more about remembering all your friends, not only your loved ones.

In Estonia Valentine’s Day is called Sõbrapäev, which has the same meaning

How much?????!!!

In the UK, just under half of the population spend money on their Valentines and around 1.3 billion pounds are spent yearly on cards, flowers, chocolates and other gifts, with an estimated 25 million cards being sent In the UK, just under half of the population spend money on their Valentines and around 1.3 billion pounds are spent yearly on cards, flowers, chocolates and other gifts, with an estimated 25 million cards being sent!!

Leap Year Proposals

It is alleged that in 1288 Queen Margaret of Scotland decreed through her Parliament that in a leap year any woman could propose to any man she liked. He could refuse her only if he was already engaged. But if, defying the law, he still insisted on preserving his single state and rejected the woman’s advances, he was liable to a fine of GBP100. The men conceded but stipulated that the women indicated their intention by wearing a scarlet petticoat with a clearly visible hem.

This gave bachelors warning and a sporting chance to get out of the way.

So…Will you Marry Me?

AS the above inspiration all told…l have come up with a quirky if not all together practical 2 for 1 solution. The ladies can propose marriage to their intended at the same time offering a cuppa of their favourite brew!

My Tea Cosy is embroidered with the surname of your choice on the back of the cosy and the proposal at the front. Just let me know the name in advance !
