Who was St. Wite?

It is unfortunately not possible definitely to identify St. Wite.

Until the middle of the 19th century the local tradition had always been, for something like 900 years, that St. Wite was a Saxon woman who was killed by the Danes on one of the occasions of their landing at Charmouth, Dorset

Lastly but by no means the least  Finland Valentine’s Day is called Ystävänpäivä which translates into “Friend’s day”. As the name indicates, this day is more about remembering all your friends, not only your loved ones.

Leap Year Proposals

It is alleged that in 1288 Queen Margaret of Scotland decreed through her Parliament that in a leap year any woman could propose to any man she liked. He could refuse her only if he was already engaged. But if, defying the law, he still insisted on preserving his single state and rejected the woman’s advances, he was liable to a fine of GBP100.  The men conceded but stipulated that the women indicated their intention by wearing a scarlet petticoat with a clearly visible hem.

This gave bachelors warning and a sporting chance to get out of the way.
